hey,
what's up? i miss you. do you miss me?
mike's in nyc for a greenhouse conference, he got there safely. we decided to fly there to cut travel time, didn't work out that way. but he's there safely. i'm going to nyc on saturday to meet him there. i am so excited because i remembered that we found all of these neat places, because mike and i always seek out the veggie restaurants, small independent record shops, clothes shops and megastores like Sanrio etc... Too bad Veg City Diner closed... We'll still go to Angelica's Kitchen and Kate's Joint (two awesome restaurants). I will go to the "Hello Kitty Superstore" -- aka Sanrio. Our tickets for Sigur Ros just came in the mail... I love Massey Hall. Every show there is "top notch", the sound incredible. We're also seeing SMOG.
I'm reading like mad --- finished Freakonomics (completely unlike me and I didn't agree with all of Stephen Levitt's agreements - but an interesting read nonetheless). I'm also reading Sylvanus Now (Donna Morrissey) after that I have to read Down To The Dirt. Read this summary:
Keith Kavanagh lost his virginity at 13 to a woman twice his age. He met his girlfriend, Natasha, while pissing on the hood of her father’s truck. He may have almost burned down the North Side of the Cove, but not even his best friend, Andy, knows for sure. Keith Kavanagh is one of the most raw and beguiling characters in recent Canadian fiction, and is the turbulent anti-hero of Down to the Dirt, the visceral first novel by writer and actor Joel Hynes. From the kitchens and basements of the Cove to the bars of St. John’s and the alleys of Halifax, this is a stark and edgy chronicle of violence, drugs, sex and black humour. Hynes writes with a deft crispness and introspection that carries the authenticity of Keith’s anger and self-destructive adventures.
They said it's Canada's Mark Renton... you know how much I loved Trainspotting. I'm also going to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory after that.. because I really liked the new movie. Something about training all those squirrels (I read it wasn't computer trickery - but actual SQUIRRELS) to sort those nuts. I really liked Freddy Highmore's characterization of Charlie.. it was right on. But, I know many people are dear to the first movie with Gene Wilder. I personally like The Witches more. Talk about a dark movie and even darker book. It's my favourite Dahl book that I even read it in French. The Grand High Witch, now that kills any other horror character. Also, for the less dark Dahl, I love ESIO TROT... A story about a old man who loves his upstairs neighbour and uses tortoises to get to her heart. I wanted a tortoise after that movie.
I also saw Wedding Crashers. SOOOOO good. See this movie, it's completely stupid but that's what makes it soo funny and so good. hmmm... I'm in Mississauga all week, it's neat being home.
take care,
Vicki
